Post Stroke Rehab

What is Stroke?

Each year, more than 15 million people worldwide suffer from a stroke, with 5 million deaths and another 5 million left with disabilities.

The primary cause of stroke is cerebral circulation disorders, such as blood vessel rupture (hemorrhagic stroke) or vascular blockage (ischemic stroke). These conditions lead to a lack of oxygen and nutrients in brain cells, resulting in brain damage and impaired bodily functions.

Common clinical consequences include:

  • Facial asymmetry (drooping of the mouth and eye)
  • Hemiplegia (paralysis on one side of the body)
  • Speech difficulties
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control

Because stroke occurs suddenly and progresses rapidly, resembling the swift nature of wind, it is referred to as “cerebral stroke” (脑中风) or “apoplexy” (卒中) in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Types of Stroke

According to the different causes of abnormal blood supply to the brain, stroke is divided into two main types:

  1. Ischemic Stroke (such as cerebral thrombosis, cerebral embolism) – mainly caused by fat accumulation inside blood vessels. Fat deposits can easily form blood clots, leading to vascular narrowing or blockage, which damages brain cells. Blood clots can form inside the brain or originate from other parts of the body. Clots outside the brain usually come from the neck or the heart. When an irregular heartbeat, such as atrial fibrillation, occurs, it increases the risk of clot formation.

  2. Hemorrhagic Stroke (such as cerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage) – caused by blood vessel rupture and bleeding, where the hematoma and edema compress brain tissue, leading to a series of clinical symptoms.

Any condition caused by external impact, stretching, twisting, or compression of the body’s joints, tendons, and muscles—or resulting from aging, weakness, or overexertion—without fractures or open wounds falls under the category of musculoskeletal injuries.

Sometimes, stroke symptoms completely disappear within 24 hours—this condition is known as a mini-stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Some TIA symptoms may only last a few minutes. If TIA is suspected, immediate medical attention is necessary, as it serves as a high-risk warning sign for a full-blown stroke.

In recent years, the number of stroke cases has been increasing at an alarming rate, with a growing trend among younger individuals. To reduce stroke incidence and mortality, the best approach is to prevent risk factors. Those at high risk should also pay attention to their lifestyle habits to lower the chances of stroke.

Although a stroke occurs suddenly, its symptoms can be reversed if treated in time. Therefore, seeking medical attention immediately is crucial if a stroke is suspected.

In the U.S., public education promotes the FAST method to help recognize stroke symptoms:

  • F – Face: Is one side of the face drooping? Is the mouth asymmetrical? Can the person smile properly?
  • A – Arms: Is there weakness in one arm? Can both arms be raised equally?
  • S – Speech: Is speech slurred or unclear?
  • T – Time: If any of the above symptoms appear, seek medical help immediately.

Doctors will assess the patient right away to determine the location and type of stroke.
