由于生理功能减退和身体内环境的改变，年长者容易出现失眠、头晕、便秘等症状。随着五脏功能减退，年长者多有正气不足、抵抗力和自愈能力下降的问题，因而老年人容易生病，往往也发病重、恢复缓慢，甚至有后遗症。
中医治疗老年病，常以增强脏器功能为主，再配合活血祛邪，让正气盛于邪气，使疾病趋于康复，又不易反复。
此外，老年人半身不遂、脚力不好、冠心病、高血压病、糖尿病、慢性泄泻、慢性咳嗽等，都可透过中医药来调理。
